September 2017 Newsletter

Greetings friends and neighbors!  We all have had a busy summer with some great family times, many of you going on vacation and a small core group attending our June, July and August events here at the Spinney.  Now that the summer is ending and our clubhouse will be soon opening, we are sure that more of you will attend the activities we have planned for September and beyond!

Tai Chi for Health

Thursdays, 10:30AM

Weekly class, all ages and abilities are welcome.  Class will take place at the Bethlehem Public Library.  Participants will build on skills from week to week. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. For more information and to register, call 439-9314.

Meet the Author: Elizabeth Brundage

Monday, September 11th, 1:30PM

Celebrated local author, Elizabeth Brundage, will appear at the Bethlehem Public Library to discuss her novel All Things Cease to Appear.  This event will replace our book club this month.

Lunch with Neighbors

Wednesday, September 13th, 11AM

Enjoy this month’s lunch with neighbors at the 165 Restaurant in the Normanside Country Club.  Reservations to Connie by 9/1 at 3PM at or (518) 439-0164.

Make Your Own Autumn Wreath

Friday, September 15th, 10:30AM

Cost: $6/person

Create your own special autumn wreath in the Model Cottage (8 Rembiano Court).  Material cost is $6 per person.  If you have a glue gun, please bring it.  RSVP early as there are supplies for 12 people.

Apple Picking at Indian Ladder

Monday, September 18th, 10AM

Meet at the Model Cottage and carpool to Indian Ladder Farms for apple picking!  There is an opportunity to pick your own (why not share a bag?) or purchase some at the lovely store.  There is also a nice café for lunch.

Guided Meditation

Tuesday, September 19th, 1PM

We all live with some degree of stress and it can get in the way of our everyday life.  Why not join us to learn how to meditate for stress relief.  Dayle Groudine, Reiki Master (and Spinney resident!), will guide us through self-cleansing the 7 Chakras (the energy centers of our body in which energy flows) and a guided visualization meditation.  Please bring a water bottle, blanket/yoga mat/pillow if you wish to lie on the floor or if you want to cover up under a blanket… of course, some might prefer meditating in a chair.  Event will take place at the Bethlehem Public Library Board Room.

Learn to Arm Knit

Wednesday, September 20th, 2PM

Learn how to knit an infinity scarf using yarn and your arm at the Bethlehem Public Library.  No experience necessary!  Bring one skein of super bulky yarn.  Sign up by calling (518) 439-9314.  Limited to 15 people so sign up fast!

Mardi Gras Dinner Cruise

Friday, September 22nd, 7-9PM

Cost: $55/person

Enjoy a Mardi Gras Dinner cruise on the Minnie Ha Ha in Lake George, NY.  Arrive early to assure parking and tickets.  Tickets can be booked on Lake George Steamboat Company’s website.


Monday, September 25th, 1:30-3PM

Spend an hour writing with the last half hour for optional sharing and feedback at the Bethlehem Public Library.  Open to anyone interested in writing; all abilities, genres welcome.

Nutrition for 55 and Up

Tuesday, September 26th, 11AM

Nutrition can be a balancing act!  Meet in the front lobby of ShopRite of Slingerlands for a program on nutrition.  Get the skinny on what is best for our age group to be focusing on for optimum health.  Refreshments will be served.

Birthday Celebration

We will celebrate all of you who have had recent birthdays or will have your birthday this month!  Come stop by the Model Cottage for cake!

Coffee and Conversation

The Bethlehem Public Library will be discussing jazz over coffee!

LOOKING AHEAD: Storytelling Fundraiser

Tuesday, October 19th, 1PM

Cost: $10/person

The Spinney at Van Dyke will be hosting a special fundraiser at the new Clubhouse to benefit the Bethlehem Food Pantry.  We will be enchanted by Kate Dudding, a professional storyteller, bringing us through music and tales back to the best Broadway composers and lyricists of all time.  Bring your friends, relatives and neighbors to this lovely afternoon.  Tax deductible donation of $10 per person – checks made payable to Bethlehem Food Pantry.
